Endometriosis Related Pain

Endometriosis-related pain is caused by abnormal growth of tissue similar to the lining of the uterus, known as endometriotic lesions, outside of the uterus. This leads to pain, inflammation, scarring and adhesions

This can lead to several types of pain

  • Dysmenorrhoea (Painful Periods)
  • Dyspareunia (Pain with Sex)
  • Bowel and Bladder Pain
  • Chronic Pelvic Pain beyond Periods
  • Post surgical pelvic pain in 40% post endometrial ablation surgery

At Perth Pelvic Pain we take the time to understand your pain and offer targeted treatments to help you regain your quality of life.

Why Endometriosis Pain Persists

Endometriosis can trigger:

  • Nerve overactivity – central sensitisation where the pain system becomes hyper-alert
  • Pelvic floor muscle spasms
  • Visceral hypersensitivity – other organs in the pelvis like the bladder and bowel sending amplified signals.
  • Failed inhibition – the brain loses it’s natural ‘volume control’ for pain.

That’s why the pain doesn’t always match the number, or even the presence of lesions. And it’s why advanced pain therapies matter.

Three options that re-wire the system

1) Rhizotomy (Nerve Reset)
Treatment of misfiring pelvic nerves using pulsed heat energy to carefully interrupt pain transmission. Performed under image guidance with sedation in hospital. Often brings months of relief allowing rehabilitation to take hold.

2) Treatment of misfiring pelvic nerves using pulsed heat energy to carefully interrupt pain transmission. Performed under image guidance with sedation in hospital. Often brings months of relief allowing rehabilitation to take hold.
If your muscles never let go, no amount of stretching works. Botox (Botulinum Toxin) can be injected into hypertonic pelvic floor muscles under anaesthesia.

  • Reduces spasms, breaking the pain-tension cycle
  • Allows physiotherapy to be more effective
  • Relief can last 3-6 months, with repeat treatments as needed.

Think of it as giving your muscles permission to relax – so your nervous system can follow.

3) Ketamine infusion therapy
For some, the pain is no longer just local. It’s central. This can help to ‘wind down’ pain overactivity, and may also ease associated symptoms such as fatigue, mood disturbance and poor sleep. We do this in conjunction with experienced therapists, in a specialist setting, monitored by experienced clinicians, to ensure you are safe.
